Lourdes Grottos in Nevada

I was able to find only two Lourdes grottos in the state of Nevada, and likely neither of them still exist, nor could I find any photos of either.

St. Paul’s Church, Winnemucca (1924, likely not extant)

When the impressive St. Paul’s Church in Winnemucca was completed and dedicated in 1924, a lengthy article about it was published, which contained mention of a Lourdes grotto in the interior of the church:

In the rear in two niches in the wall are the baptismal fount and a grotto representing the apparition of the Virgin at Lourdes.

Nevada State Journal (Reno), Oct 19, 1924

There is still a niche in the rear wall of the church that contains a statue of the BVM, but it is not a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes, shown in an online Google photo. If a small rocky grotto was part of the original church, it was likely removed during a remodel of the church interior. There is an outdoor grotto of Our Lady of Fatima next to the church sidewalk.

Holy Family Convent, Reno (1945, likely not extant)

A 1945 newspaper article announced this:

Dedicate Grotto At Convent Here: Dedication to Our Lady of Lourdes of the recently built grotto on the grounds of the Holy Family convent, 491 Court st., will be Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Bishop Thomas K. Gorman will officiate. A flag raising ceremony on the convent grounds will follow the dedication. All friends of the sisters are invited to attend.

Reno Gazette-Journal, Jun 8, 1945

The house at 491 Court St. still stands, according to an architectural history of the house, and is currently a commercial property, but the grotto likely has been removed.
